1st XV lose their first away league game of the season!

Match Report by Ian Hessay

York travelled to Beverley for a game which would have no effect on either the top or bottom of the league, giving a debut for 17 year old second row Harrison Savage.

York kicked off securing possession and playing some very good attacking rugby. After 10 minutes the score was 10-0 to York with a try from Sam Forbes and a conversion and penalty from John Dawes. From the restart Beverley began to flicker into life and excellent handling in midfield allowed them to score under the posts. York came straight back at Beverley; Liam Hessay sliced straight through the Beverley midfield making a 50m break but a lack of support resulted in a penalty to Beverley for holding on. Five minutes later, Toby Atkin broke in similar fashion with the same result.

The Beverley forwards were now dominating the set piece and breakdown securing good ball for Beverley’s excellent back line. Over the next 20 minutes Beverley scored 4 try’s with some scintillating running rugby 33-10 HT.

York started the second half with some good phases of play pressing the Beverley line. However normal service was quickly restored. A turnover 10m from the Beverley line saw the home team run the full length of the pitch to score under the posts. York responded with a converted try by Shane Goulding. 2 further tries from Beverley and 2 from York through Darren Rutherford and Lewis Hannibal, brought the scoring to an end and a well deserved win for Beverley 52-31. Jon Dawes converted all the York tries.
York were effectively blown away by a devastating 20min spell in the first half by an impressive Beverley side who should be pushing for promotion next season. The game was very well refereed by Adam Robson.

York travel to Heath next week looking to resume normal service.
