Another good home win against Morley. Match Report by Carter Croft.

York 2nd XV 24 v Morley 2nd XV 5

York gained a bonus point victory on a lovely firm surface for running and handling rugby.

York fielded a very strong starting team and a quality bench of replacements. They possibly started a little over confidently though and had to remember never to underestimate an opponent. York commenced positively, camping on the opponent’s line but missed a number of opportunities. In the next period, Morley found holes in the York defence creating chances but were unable to finish. Only a series of turnovers by Morley in the second period of the first half kept them in the game when they committed numbers to the breakdown. Then, big Harry Jinks, who looked dangerous when given the chance, was put away 35 metres out and was able to finish in the corner - the conversion was missed.
A tactical substitution, bringing on Louis Jackson, proved to be a game changer. He created line breaks with his powerful carries and a change at 8 brought on Charlie Wilson; he injected pace to exploit the spaces. York looked a different outfit, creating forward movement, quick ball for Nick Speck which produced ‘go forward’ rugby. A game that looked in the balance at half-time saw York pull away with a 35 metre run from Louis Jackson which took half the Morley side over the line with him as he scored. The try was converted by Sam Elliott. The game had changed and an interception on our 10 metre line saw Harry Jinks run down the wing to score. He is a great prospect when he decides to go - our George North! If only he’d do it more often he would really scare many opposition teams. James Hartley burst over for the final try which was converted by Neil McClure. Morley came back strongly at the end scoring a well taken try by their right wing. York then held out with some really good defence at the end of the game to keep their line intact.

We saw a good game of rugby that was tighter than the score line suggested. Congratulations to Neil McClure for creating a good team who continue improving week by week. A group of players that listen, want to learn, and have a great team spirit.

Tries: Harry Jinks 2, Louis Jackson, James Hartley.
Conversions: Sam Elliott 1, Neil McClure1.
