Intermediate Cup sets up a very interesting next few weeks!!

York’s excellent start to the season continued last Saturday with an emphatic 98-7 over Newcastle Medicals in our first Intermediate Cup fixture of the season. This took our winning start to 7 games and in doing so, we have amassed 382 points at an average of just under 55 per game - a fantastic achievement. If that scoring rate continues, the club record for points in a season will be smashed out of sight.
You have to go back many years, 35 years in fact, to the last time York got off to such a great start. In the 1982-83 Season we managed 9 victories before the run finally came to an end away at Old Brod’s on the 23rd October 1982. The press report of the day said we played downhill with the wind in the first half and we were only 6 -3 ahead; this probably explained our defeat!
Head coach Lee Denham continues to set goals which thus far have all been achieved. He has set the very ambitious, but highly attainable target of winning the next 5 games, which if achieved will see us with 12 straight wins.
That would bring us within 1 victory of beating the club record of consecutive wins. This was achieved by the recording breaking team of 1984-85. Then, our run was halted away at Doncaster where we narrowly lost 14-12.That year we amassed 702 points, winning 33 of our 41 games.
This Saturday sees us face a very difficult away trip to Hullensians, the only team we didn’t beat last season. I’m sure the team (as would I) would welcome as many supporters to make the trip down the A1079 to Hull as possible. The team deserve our support; I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there on Saturday.
