They just keep on winning. Report from David Norman.

Today brought together thus far four weeks of pre-season training and some exceptional individual skill and commitment from those who travelled west to Halifax. Ten players, five games, two coaches and a mascot brought some truly remarkable rugby to the game we all love. Teams from across the region were drawn together as kick off drew near, some arriving much too earlier than others!

York 25 Old Brodleians 10
York’s first game was against the Old Brodleians where some stiff tackling by Kel, Harriett and Ruth brought 5 tries to the good for York’s opening match.

A tough second match encounter with the hosts again brought some fine displays of tackling. Those noted were Kat, Jess and Sarah and also Sarah’s off load in the tackle brought great pleasure to the coaches. Another selection of great tries sealed the win.

York 10 Wetherby 15
Third game in and with plenty of fluids taken on board, York reached halfway with an encounter we all knew would be a tough one for both sides to contest. Having barely written down the team sheet to record the game, Georgina had made an outstanding solo run to score the opening try. Tough times lay ahead as we knew Wetherby would be quick to return the ball and get the game flowing once again. But with some driven defence and an excellent cover tackle from Kel, they struggled, but eventually equalled the score board. With ball in hand, York applied surplus amounts of pressure onto the Wetherby line with a great team try by Ruth. This unfortunately was to be York’s last try as Wetherby fought back and scored two unanswered tries. A great game to be involved in with two great teams going hammer and tongs at each other.

After every game thus far come naturall leaders who love to take the game by the scruff of the neck - none more so than Laura Young. As the day went on, she grew as a natural option to run the ball hard down the depths of the opposition. Strong in the tackle with the ever-constant support of Kel by her side, her performance led to a haul of tries for Paulina. Paulina's natural skill of holding the ball in two hands is a joy to watch. Tough organisational skills by Harriett, ensured this was a game York were naturally going to win. With some great defence tackling ensuring Georgina would add valuable points to an outstanding display from all ten players.

York 15 Rotherham 0
As the day was drawing to a close, it was left to the ten who had made the journey to ensure that the next time the squad pick up the shirt and play, it is a winning shirt! And they did not disappoint! Through the lines of running from Jess and Laura Young who softened Rotherham to enable tries from Paulina, the girls produced a fine, final display. Tough tackling from Laura ‘Crusher’ Coles ensured the defence remained strong throughout, and naturally with a gleaming smile on her face. Also led to Jess joining in hitting the opposition hard.

Today has been a great curtain opener for the coaches and has made our coaching all the better by your continued enthusiasm and eagerness to produce some great rugby.
