York RUFC Women 78 v Ripon RUFC Ladies 0

A wet, breezy day encountered the York ladies today, keen to continue from where they left off last week. Versatile and willing, saw veteran number eight Jess Hall slide in at number 12 with centre partner Robyn Davies to provide a dynamic back line. And with wingers Laura Coles and Jane Richardson ever eager to be on the end of a supporting pass, York were up for the challenge.
No sooner had the referee blew his whistle, York had found themselves on the front foot. After some intense attacking play from the forward pack, Laura Young opened the scoring, having only recently returned to the starting lineup following a minor injury - this wasn’t to be her only try of the game, much to her delight. The game restarted and after some well-organised interplay between the forwards and backs, fly half Ruth Whitehead went over for her first of two tries. Play resumed and the ball kindly fell into the hands of Angela Coultish who only had one thing on her mind. That was to outpace and out mustard any of the opposition standing in front of her. To say her daughter Becky plays along side her is a real credit to Angela, whose 20 metre run opened the flood gates for Kat Feetenby-Gare to score and York led 15-0.
By halftime York had attained a healthy 32-0 led with further tries from Laura Young, Laura ‘Crusher’ Coles and Ellie Seagrave all adding to the first half score board.
As the second half resumed, it took no time at all for York to dominate and score again. This time, ‘Lucky go 7’ Kel Feetenby-Gare found the whitewash and a successful conversion sealed it for all her efforts to out sprint the opposition. Ripon by this stage still were a difficult opposition and were still challenging York’s defence. But York’s clear eagerness, determination and being deliberate in all that they do, just got the better of them and as the game went on, the tries kept coming. Sophie Penny went over for her first try of the season and Katherine Hanlon whose support line of running gave her a first try too. Robyn Davies also found time to cross the line with another great performance at outside centre with Ruth Whitehead adding the extras to hers and Katherine’s try too. With the luxury of interchangeable substitutes, performances from the bench from Mel Pickering, Katherine Hanlon and Jude McDowell just added to a great winning performance. And so, with 20 minutes left on the clock, tries from Ruth Whitehead, Ellie Seagrave, Robyn Davies and Jess Hall, sealed the game for York.
Much still for both coaches to work on, but it was another great performance from York Women. Next week they face West Park Leeds at home.
