On a day with weather fit for cricket, we scored 9 tries and 5 conversions. Again, we went in with a game plan and we played to it - well done fellas. This enabled us to play some good flowing rugby against a good Ilkley team. Early on it was ‘even stephens’ with alternate tries in the first 20 minutes - two tries apiece. The difference between the two teams were Angus Barrick’s conversions giving a 14-10 lead - a deserved try for Will Norris and the first of Nathan McQuade’s. The latter saw a gap and he showed great speed to go in under the posts from 40 metres; he had a good game with a sound service although his kicking will still benefit from work. Both half backs showed great promise. Angus Barrick is a very talented player - running the show. Jo Simpson, playing out of position at 12, scored a try as well as some great tackling and was presented with The Steel Balls Trophy as Man of the Match.
The second half saw York pull away with 2 well taken tries from Rob Green and with Adam Bowers and Ollie Rupp dominating the lineouts they both scored a try apiece. Two more tries for Mcquade, finding the gap at a breakdown and a set scrum. Towards the end, we conceded two tries which were both converted - losing a bit of concentration and accuracy, but by then the job was done.
This victory was built on great set plays, ball carrying, ball retention and some good off loads. The team played to our game plan and the reshuffled back division acquitted themselves well.
