York’s first home game of 2011, and the temperatures had soared to a balmy 4oC; perfect weather to watch the games from the comfort of the Clubhouse.

Pre-match training again at 9:45, with a very pleasing 16 player turnout; most arriving fairly promptly (Alex – get your Dad out of bed earlier on a Sunday morning; he needs more time to get his wellies on).

There was a substantial squad from Selby. A good turnout for bith sides from their supporters as well. By 10:30 we were ready for the off. Six games were played in total, with York playing each of the visitors twice.

York and Selby was the first game (the first return match of the season); Selby had pipped York in the first match of the season, so this was an eagerly awaited rematch.

From the start it was clear that York were focused and organised; the York forwards (Joe, Alex and Fraser in the starting line-up) had good control of the rucks and mauls, despite some size advantage to Selby. This allowed some terrific opportunities for the York backs to display their skills. Steele put the first try over (5-0), with Toby P then making a great interception of a Selby pass to run half the pitch and score (10-0). York went further ahead when Steele displayed some characteristic weaving and dodging across the pitch to score his second (15-0). Barney wrapped up the game with a strong try following a run down the touchline (20-0). Final score York 20-0 Selby.

York and Selby played again. This was a more evenly matched game than the first, with Selby forwards contesting the scrums more strongly. However, the “word-of-the-day” (Interception) reared its head again; Tom M once again reacted instinctively and took a Selby pass close to their line (5-0). There then followed a period of closely contested play between the two sides, with York defending excellently near their try line against a determined series of attacks by Selby. Ollie eventually put the game beyond reach with another try (10-0). Final score York 10-0 Selby.

A clean sheet for York in two well played games against a big side. The York forwards worked hard and provided an excellent controlling platform for the backs to demonstrate their running skills. All games were played in a good spirit and with sporting appreciation for everyone’s efforts.

The rest of the pitches now being deserted, it was decided to call it a day!
