Pre-match training again at 9:45, with a very pleasing 16 player turnout; most arriving fairly promptly (Alex – get your Dad out of bed earlier on a Sunday morning; he needs more time to get his wellies on).
There was a good turnout from the Boro lads considering the distance that they had to travel. A substantial turnout for both sides from their supporters as well. By 10:30 we were ready for the off. Six games were played in total, with York playing each of the visitors twice.
York and Middlesbrough was the second game. It has been some time that these two teams have met (beyond my memory capacity anyway).
Steele decided to start the game as he had the previous match against Selby, and quickly ran in the first York try (5-0). Oliver was passed the ball from a line out and ran in the second try (10-0). Then the “try-machine” Tom M decided to get in on the action and put his first of the day away (15-0); he quickly followed this with his second after Steele passed to him and he cut through five Boro players to score (20-0). York displayed some terrific teamwork, and selfless passing, with Joseph making the finishing move to stretch the lead (25-0). Further great Rugby when Tom M made the running and, then flipped the ball over for Oliver to put down (30-0). The York forwards (Joe, Alex and Fraser on at this time) were once again in control of the scrum, ruck and maul, and contributed greatly to getting the ball through to George to increase the lead further (35-0). The forwards again created the next opportunity, which was finished off by Tom M running down the touchline to score (40-0). A brilliant interception of a Selby pass deep in their half by Tom M, allowed him burst through to score again (45-0). Final score York 45-0 Middlesbrough.
York and Middlesbrough played once more. As with the second game against Selby, this was a more closely contested match. George made a lot of ground through the Selby defence, and in a scramble of bodies on the Boro try line Will was eventually able to score the first try (5-0). He quickly followed this with another (10-0). Tom M wrapped up a great morning with another couple of tries (15-0, 20-0). Final score York 20-0 Middlesbrough.
A clean sheet for York in two well played games against a big side. The York forwards worked hard and provided an excellent controlling platform for the backs to demonstrate their running skills. All games were played in a good spirit and with sporting appreciation for everyone’s efforts.
The rest of the pitches now being deserted, it was decided to call it a day!
