York RUFC have announced the signing of former Super League player Josh Griffin ahead of the 2026/27 season, bringing a wealth of professional rugby league experience to Clifton Park.
Griffin arrives at the club following an 18 year career in rugby league, during which he represented a number of Super League sides, including Wakefield Trinity, Huddersfield Giants, Castleford Tigers, Salford Red Devils and Hull FC.
His most significant spell came at Hull FC, where he spent seven seasons and helped the club lift the Challenge Cup in 2017. More recently, Griffin was part of the York Knights squad that made history by securing and competing in the city’s first-ever Super League campaign.
While Griffin has made his name in rugby league, the move to York RUFC also represents a return to his roots. Having grown up playing the 15-a-side game in Oxford, Griffin switched codes and later returned to rugby union during his professional career. Between 2012 and 2014, he spent two seasons with Leeds Carnegie in the RFU Championship, featuring as a Centre.
His experience across both codes gives York RUFC an experienced addition to their squad as they prepare for the new campaign. Griffin’s involvement with the club will extend beyond his playing duties. He will also become an ambassador for The York Rugby Network, the club’s business community, which aims to connect York’s professional network through rugby.
He is sponsored by Fortus Property, formerly known as ICE Group.
Griffin’s arrival adds another familiar name to the York rugby scene, combining extensive professional experience with a previous background in union.
Welcome to York, Josh.
