John started playing rugby with Pocklington RUFC as a junior and eventually moved on to Sheffield Hallam University. After spells with Hull Ioanians and Rotherham, he went overseas and played at Hong Kong Scottish for a number of years - winning 6 international caps playing for Hong Kong, with the peak being against against Japan.
On his return to the UK, John had a spell playing with Hull RFC before relocating with his work to the Midlands.
Now back in his hometown of Stamford Bridge he has signed for York RUFC.
