Carters Comments:
Again, York put a very good side out to face a physical Scunthorpe who have struggled to field a team on a few occasions this season. They came to Clifton Park and gave a very good account of themselves and it looked at one time as if they were going to snatch the game at the death.
York set off at real pace, winning possession and dominating territory threatening the line, only to be impatient and making errors on the try line. After 5 minutes Will Kinnersley turned the ball over on the opponents 22, Willem Enslin flipped one out of the backdoor to Jordan Miller who covered twenty metres for a touchdown in the corner. Sadly he then had to limp off with a pulled hamstring to end his speedy debut. On 17 minutes, Ben Dent, impressive at full back, put a lively Huss Adhag away with Alex Riley in support to score and also converting.
Another strong run was made by the irrepressible Adhag. He’d been being put away by Tom Woofendin who then took the return pass and kicked a grubber to run onto and score himself; he is a very skilful player. Then Scunthorpe got on the scoreboard with an unconverted try just before half time but York looked well in control
Half time score: 17-5
Scunthorpe started the second period scoring another try and converting it. York were unable to get any possession and were not being helped by a series of penalties awarded against us. Our players were being tested by these decisions. Our new recruit on the right wing Jack Bass then scored a brilliant solo try under the posts, converted by Alex Riley, to seal a hard fought win for York. Another unconverted try came as the juggernaut forwards of Scunthorpe laid on good possession for their outside backs to score but York held on for the win.
A bonus point victory by the skin of our teeth to put us top of the table after four games.
Final score: York RUFC 2ndXV 24 v Scunthorpe RUFC 2nd XV 17
