York 2nd team v Cleckheaton

Ian Coe25 Mar 2018 - 13:31

Points Fest at Clifton Park.

York 2nd XV 60 v Cleckheaton 2nd XV 7

We were able to field our strongest team on paper, this season, two first XV players coming down and three students on vacation. This gave us the cushion of a very strong bench, plus the ever green, calm, mercurial Neil McClure.

We set off at an usually rapid pace, not often we hit the blocks running, a first minute penalty in front of the posts converted by Jack Ambler. This was followed by two quick tries, giving us an early 13-0, lead. Cleckheaton caused us a few problems though - they occupied our 22, creating pressure, then a few missed tackles allowed them the luxury of a converted try. We then cut loose, giving us a 30 point halftime lead. Harry Jinx taking over the kicking role, he strikes the ball cleanly, getting enormous height.
The second half saw York continuing their good work but we butchered a few opportunities! Cleckheaton never gave up and were always a threat around the rucks. Neil McClure coming on gave us an opportunity to move Will Atkin to 12, Stefan Dziurzynski to his preferred No 8, (thanks Stef for helping out at 12), and in Lewis Jackson we had a good sub at No 8.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the boys for an outstanding attitude, good execution and working together as a team. A special mention goes to our captain Conor for his leadership on and off the field. Also to Jack Ambler who was playing his last game of the season - he has given us good service.

The only negatives were the penalties awarded against us - some interesting refereeing decisions! The positives - a great win in ideal rugby playing conditions; a great Senior Rugby debut for Will Fordy, at last an appearance from Charlie Elliott and Harrison Savage. This season a number of young players have been blooded, four having progressed towards first team rugby. This is a tribute to the team; we must now focus on our objectives as our season is coming to a close - training please especially Thursdays.

Tries: Will Fordy 3, Lewis Jackson 2, Steff Dziurzynski 2, Will Atkin, Harry Jinx.
Conversions: Harry Jinx 5, Jack Ambler Penalties: Jack Ambler
