Being the most northerly team invited to play in the tournament, we'd left the club at 6.15am - only to be caught up in more traffic than we'd expected and only arrived at 11.35am!
That didn't stop us getting through our group games with two wins and two draws - one draw only due to a disputed last minute equaliser by the opposition.
There were four groups, playing their games on 4 ‘pitches’ across the width of Twickenham. The other teams in our section were: Heathfield Rangers, South Woodham RFC, Eton Manor RFC, and Newbury RFC (fielding 3 female players in their squad).
Our squad consisted of Chris Fox, Toby Atkin, Joseph Maud, Andy Kay, Henry Bradley, Charlie Nicholson, Hugh Nicholson, Ben Johnson, Rich Downey and Andy Lee.
We played a long semi-final against Northampton Sinners, who come from Northampton Saints - but not the first team! This went into extra, extra, extra, extra time and York came out the winners.
This semi-final win put us through to the final against a team from Gravesend Rugby Club. The club is in National 3 and they'd been practising for a full 7's tournament - and were obviously more rested than us! In the end, fatigue caught up with the team when once again the final went to extra, extra, extra time! We lost to a sudden death try but had had a great experience at ‘Twickers’!
After some food and a drink(!), we headed North through the London traffic and got back to the club at 10.50pm!
Congratulations must go to all those who represented the club in the tournament - some of whom were working until very late the night before and had work commitments upon our return.
