York followed Malton out of the Yorkshire Shield as they lost 25-10 at Yarnbury in round one.
A couple of missed tackles led to the opening try for the home side and a second followed from an intercepted pass. Both were converted.
Joe Maud’s try, converted by Ben Johnson, reduced the arrears and Johnson added a penalty to make it 14-10.
York bossed the opening 20 minutes of the second half, and were unlucky on two occassions not to get a try. The first a box kick from scrum half Arran Thompson was chased down by Alex Nixon who was unable to ground the ball at the last minute. Second a grubber from Ben Johnson saw Sam Potrykus edged out in a 50/50 touchdown - awarded to Yarnbury.
Yarnbury then kicked two penalties and grabbed a late try to book their passage into round two.
The few positives for York included the return to action of Andy Kay after injury, plus the performances of winger Dave Routledge and full-back Alex Nixon.
