A big squad of 1st and 2nd team players travelled to Old Malton on Thursday evening for a friendly game against Malton & Norton RUFC. On what was a mild, still, summer evening under floodlights, 4x20 minute quarters were played to give everybody some game time.
The steady changes of players some of whom were playing out of position, broke up the structure at times. From the touchline it was entertaining nonetheless. Generally end to end stuff with a steadily increasing scoreline. York probably had the upper hand in the scrums until a succession of injuries to Malton players ended up with uncontested scrums. A shame as the 2nd squad’s game at Ripon ended up the same due to the total York dominance. If some of the final passes had gone to hand or even been close to the player, the score would have been higher. To be fair, the same could be said of the opposition.
Final score York 28 Malton & Norton 21. Tries from Liam Hessay, Sam Taylor, Jonty Atkinson & Ollie Rupp. All converted by Liam Hessay who had ably controlled the 80 minutes at flyhalf.
The final? friendly is at Doncaster on Friday evening.
