A BAD day at the office was how club spokesman Andy Kay described York RUFC’s 25-3 defeat at Bridlington in Yorkshire One.

The visitors were seldom in the game despite the laudable efforts of their forwards who were a genuine match for their east coast counterparts. Particularly impressive was Joe Maud, a Clifton Park youngster who stepped up to fill the troublesome number seven vacancy – York have lost three players in that position lately to injury. He tackled well and put himself about ample times to catch the eye.

However, that youthful promise aside, York were largely second best, especially in a first half when they had the worst of atrocious conditions of a swirling wind and driving rain and against a side gunning for promotion and with a fly-half on top of his game scoring a try and four penalties.

The Clifton Park crew trailed 17-0 at half-time and knew to have any chance of retrieving anything from the duel they had to score first after the interval.

However, that honour went to Bridlington with a converted try that sealed the issue.

The only time York troubled the scorers was via a penalty by fly-half Paul Williams for an offside infringement.
