DERBY honours went to York RUFC as they secured their second win over Selby in the space of a week.
Having ousted Selby from the Yorkshire Shield at Clifton Park in midweek, York beat their Sandhill Lane hosts 39-12 in Yorkshire One on Saturday.
The opening 20 minutes were typically hard-fought and errors by York’s normally reliable back three gifted Selby an early 12-point lead with tries from Ben Lunt and Alex Arthur. Sam Morgan added a conversion.
York retaliated with an excellent try from Sam Potrykus after a well-organised move from a lineout and Nic Ventress converted.
Charlie Nicholson scored York’s second try with swift work down the left wing to even the scores.
A scoreline of 12-12 at half-time was a fair reflection, but York started the second half aggressively.
Alex Nixon was a constant source of speed and trickery on the left, and he scored a well executed try to put York in the lead.
Mike Cawthorn was leading the York backs with real skill, pinning Selby back with some huge kicks.
Ventress scored under the posts and converted, before Potrykus got his second of the game.
Ventress kicked a penalty after persistent offside and then Gareth Singleton rounded off York’s superiority with a try in the corner in the last minute.
Despite scoring 27 unanswered points in the second half, York will be eager to avoid complacency with some stern challenges ahead.
