Today’s derby game against local rivals Malton was always going to provide an entertaining and competitive game. Malton having lost their last two encounters against York, were keen to reverse those results.
Whilst the outcome of this game was (in the eyes of the author and anyone who can see what is unfolding in front of them) never in doubt. The manner in which York stood up to an onslaught of Malton pressure was admirable. The result 13-16 in Malton’s favour should have been far greater. A team 8 places above York in the league and with over 70% of the possession, should have inflicted a far more comprehensive defeat. The fact this didn’t happen shows great resolve on the part of the York squad.
Having said that, York will take no comfort knowing that they contributed to their own downfall. Too many penalties, not competing at the break down (when the ball is on the ground), too many naïve error’s and not always believing in their own ability. As a consequence, York eventually GAVE the game to Malton.
