Hullensians arrived at York 1 point and 1 place above York in the league and a close encounter was expected.

Hullensians kicked off into the wind and during the early exchanges kicked for territory. After 3 minutes, from a turnover, the Hullensians backs moved the ball well and went in for the first try. McCloud missed the conversion 0-5. From the restart, Hullensians secured possession and cleared upfield. York took the resulting lineout and put several phases of play together, Hessay put Fox in on a great line at pace to crash over for the try, McClure hit the post with the conversion. 8 minutes played 5-5. From the kick off York dropped the ball handing possession back to Hullensians, systematic of the first half. The visitors took advantage building pressure through several phases of play and forcing a penalty 35m out, McCloud made no mistake. McCloud looked an accomplished kicker and York could not afford to give him too many opportunities.5-8.

The game now settled down with York enjoying good periods of possession and playing some attractive rugby. From a scrum, Parker made a 50m break down field however handling again let York down with a try in sight. Hullensians cleared with the York backs quickly running the ball back. Singleton made a powerful run and desperate defence from Hullensians resulted in a penalty which McClure knocked over, 8-8 after 26mins. From the restart Fox secured possession and offloaded to Dunlop who set off on a 75m run showing great pace and footwork scoring under the posts. Conversion scored 15-8. Almost immediately more handing errors from York gave possession to Hullensians, allowing them to move the ball at speed and score. McCoud struck a great conversion from wide on the right to make it 15-15. With the half coming to an end, Hessay and Johnson combined to force play into the Hullensians half winning a penalty which McClure converted, 18-15 to York at half time.

The second half started in similar fashion, a succession of errors resulted in a penalty to Hullensians which McCloud converted after 45 mins. An excellent restart from McClure was collected by Fox who charged towards the Hullensians line offloading to Benson who crashed over. McClure converted, 25-18. The game now saw both teams play some good rugby, however defences took control for the first time in the match. York secured quick ball from a scrum deep in their own half allowing Hessay to break quickly upfield. Combining well with McClure and then releasing Davies on the wing, only to be thwarted by a good cover tackle. York kept up the pressure and eventually won a penalty which McClure secured, 28-18 after 65mins. Hullensians were not finished and after good interplay between forwards and backs, went over for a converted try. 68 mins 28-25. Almost from the restart Hullensians won a penalty just inside the York half which McCloud secured with ease, 28-28. To their credit York came straight back, quick hands between Hessay and McClure opened Hullensians up down the left Hannibal looked to have scored out wide but was flagged in touch. The final play saw a penalty awarded to York 40m out but into the wind, McClure's attempt drifted wide.

At times York played some of their best rugby so far this season, however basic errors cost them defensively. They have used 32 players in 4 games which shows good strength in depth but makes it difficult to build consistency.
