
York went into the match knowing 5 points may not be enough to secure a play off as a win for West Leeds would see them finish in front of York.
Heath kicked off and for the first 10 mins put York under pressure in their 22. York’s defence was strong and eventually a turnover and a 50m break from Peace relieved the pressure. From a line out, quick hands from the backs put Chris Peace in with the conversion missed, 0-5 to York.From the restart, Heath were back on the front foot and a good move from the backs allowed Cartwright to score under the posts followed by the conversion 7-5 Heath. Almost immediately York were back on the offensive. Good work from the forwards allowed Hessay to release the backs and York secured another trade mark score with McClure finishing the move and scoring the conversion. 7-12.Heath continued to pressurise the York defence. However, it was clear that the pace in the York side was going to cause problems. After several York attacks where the final pass went astray, Goulding broke 40m up the right wing to release McClure to score - conversion successful 7-19 on 30 mins. Heath came straight back at York and kicked 2 penalties to make the half time score 13-19 to York.
West Leeds were losing 16-9 away at North Ribblesdale at half time.
Heath made a good start to the second half and scored a converted try to take a 20-19 lead. York then produced some of their best rugby of the season with forwards and backs combining well to score 7 unanswered tries - 6 converted by Neil McClure.On 47 mins, a penalty kicked to the corner by Hessay and Toby Atkin scored from the line out.On 55mins, several phases of forward pressure allowed Newitt and McClure to combine and score in the corner. Then, another penalty was kicked to the corner and a set move by the forwards put Newitt in to score after 61 minutes. On 64 mins, Newitt made a 60m break to score in the corner. After 68 mins following a scrum on halfway, quick ball allowed the backs to attack with great speed and Toby Atkin scored under the posts.Campbell Thomson then broke up the centre and offloaded to McClure to score again after 72 minutes.On 75 minutes, Hessay gave a show and go to break through from half way then passed to Josh Parker to score under the posts, when it would have been easier to score himself. To their credit, Heath came back at York to secure a final converted try to make it 27-66 to York.
West Leeds came back in the second half to win and deny York a play-off spot.
Special mention should go to 33 year old Neil McClure who outscored his age by 3 points before retiring. A nice way to finish for one of York’s most consistent players this season.
