York welcomed Old Brodleians to Clifton Park knowing victory would secure the teams best ever start to a season.Eighteen year old Alistair Bradford made his debut at scrum half and didn’t disappoint with a composed performance.

Brods kicked off in perfect conditions and the early exchanges saw York control the ball although it was clear from the start that the visitors had a strong defence. On 5 mins York were awarded a penalty for off side kicking to the corner. From the line out York moved the ball at pace across the pitch for George Davies to score in the corner. John Dawes missed the difficult conversion 5-0.York continued to attack into a strong Brods defence, regularly turning the ball over. Brods started to gain some ball control and on 20mins won a penalty for offside. Cole kicked to the corner, from the line out a straight forward catch and drive allowed Jennings to score in the corner, conversion missed. 5-5. From the kick off York were soon back on the offensive. Liam Hessay was kicking well regularly gaining 40m from penalties allowing York to play the match in the Brods half. From a Brods scrum on half way York turned the ball over, Chris Fox made a 40m break before releasing Josh Parker to score, conversion missed. 10-5.York continued to control the majority of possession without creating any clear scoring opportunities. Just before half time Brods won a penalty and kicked to the corner however good defence from York preserved their half time lead.

York kicked off and secured possession, the ball went to Jon Dawes at first receiver who cut straight through the Brods defence to score under the posts and add the conversion 17-5.The game was now played almost entirely in the Brods half. The visitors were running hard at York but not finding a final pass to threaten the York line. On 50 mins Darren Rutherford joined the game; Gareth Singleton was having a strong game for York. On 55 mins Liam Hessay tackled the Brods centre stripped the ball and fed Singleton who was stopped just short. Will Atkin then came on for the injured Dawes. Brods now kicked to relieve the pressure, George Davies collected the ball and attacked from half way combining with Gareth Singleton who scored, Hessay added the conversion 24-5.Another 18 year old Lewi Jackson had now joined the game and didn’t take long to get involved with a strong carry. York were moving the ball quickly and accurately across the pitch which resulted in an excellent team try for Ross White converted by Liam Hessay. 31-5.

Another strong performance from York and with a number of injuries, several of last years Colts continue to show the strength of the squad.
Next week York travel to second place Heath for what promises to be a difficult game.
