York began the match against Hullensians at the top of the table having only been beaten once all season. Hullensians, being tenth (out of fourteen) were looking to secure their place in Yorkshire One for next season. John Dawes started at fly-half for York with Sam Potrykus outside him at centre. In the forwards, Shane Goulding was named at number eight with Joe Maud and Lewis Hannibal making up the back row. Simon Webster started as hooker.
The weather was wet and the pitch was soft as the game started. The visitors took an early lead when York shoved a scrum forward but were penalised. Hullensians set up an effective driving maul and Ollie Dynan got the score, the conversion was good. York’s full back, George Davies kicked two penalties to get York in to the game, the second penalty was awarded after hard work from the forward pack. Hullensians then scored again; the ball was distributed wide, Josh Langford kicked through and the bounce favoured the winger - the conversion was missed. As the rain fell, John Dawes was getting important distance on his kicks out of hand and he got York’s first try under the posts when he burst through the defence. George Davies converted the try and York led thirteen to twelve. George Davies took advantage of Hull being penalised for offside, his third penalty kick of the game was good. As half time approached, York defended against the Hullensians attack. York were determined and held their line, Simon Webster contributing with an important scrum hook against the head. York 16 Hullensians 12 at the midway point.
As the rain continued to fall the second half was attritional. Lewis Hannibal picked up a yellow card but York did not concede points in the ten minutes that he was off. Hullensians were also reduced to fourteen after a yellow card and York were able to score. Shane Goulding touched down after an advancing scrum. The conversion was good. The game was sealed with fifteen minutes to go with Joe Maud scoring the last points of the game, he broke out on the blind side of an attacking maul and powered over the line. Final score York 28 Hullensians 12.
Congratulations to former Colts, Oscar Bell and Harry Taylor who both made their debut from the bench for the York first team. In a break from the league, York travel to Gateshead next Saturday to play their RFU Intermediate Cup fixture.
