Match Report Saturday 24th March 2011
Driffield 32 – York 20 by Steve Maud.
Perfect playing conditions lent itself to a fast open game of rugby and that’s what was served up by both sides at every opportunity. The early Driffield game plan was plain to see from the outset, get at the York stand-off, knock him off his game and counter attack from quick turnover and or poor kick chase ball with their impressive back three show ponies. Simple, effective and as a contest this game was probably out of reach for York after the first 35 minutes and three Driffield tries.
In the early exchanges John Dawes (York 10) found himself the focus of the Driffield’s defence attention receiving man and ball on more than one occasion as the Driffield mid field defence out witted the referee. This lead to a York turnover just inside the Driffield half which was returned through slick handling and support play by the Driffield backs culminating in in a try on the right wing for Kitching who made his way round towards the posts and present himself with an easier conversion. 4 minutes Driffield 7 – 0 York.
On 11 minutes as York tried to get a foothold in the game Driffield were eventually caught offside in the midfield on their own 22 metre line presenting Dawes with a penalty kick attempt that he duly converted 7 – 3.
On 15 minutes after a couple of strong carries by the Driffield tight head prop Waterhouse saw York being penalised at the breakdown on their own 22 metre line in front of the posts which Kitching converted to put Driffield 10 – 3 up.
Driffield carried threat every time they had broken field ball and it was only excellent defensive work by Billy Cakaunitabua on the York wing that kept them in touch as Driffield tried to exploit the wide channels at every opportunity.
After 22 minutes and on the Driffield 40 metre line Driffield were reduced to 14 men when the referee tired of their ball slowing antics at the breakdown and wrongly identified Waterhouse as the offending player sending him to the sin bin. Dawes kicked the penalty 10 – 6.
After 29 minutes York kicked long the chase was good, but the tackling wasn’t the Driffield right wing eluded 3 York tackles before linking with his back 3 colleagues quick hands and support play saw Driffield return the ball with interest down the left wing for McClarron to score a well worked try. Conversion missed 15 – 6.
The game then entered perhaps its most entertaining 5 minutes with York twice going close firstly through Peter Martin and then Chris Atkinson who both found the last defender instead of their support runners to let Driffield off the hook. York were then shown how to exploit and finish 2 on 1’s when Driffield again outflanked York for the left wing to get his second try of the game. Converted 22 – 6 half time score.
York half time substitution Singleton replaced Downey on the wing.
The second half saw a more competitive York particularly around the breakdown area this would lead to the Driffield side losing their discipline and back chatting to the referee as they no longer had everything their own way. The referee would not have been criticised for yellow carding more Driffield players as they were marched back on more than one occasion for dissent and penalised for foul play.
York played themselves back into the game and on 57 minutes after a period of York pressure Jim Rossington picked a great line to wrong foot the defence and charging in to score under the posts from 20 metres. Dawes Converted. 22 – 13. No sooner had York got themselves back into the game they put themselves back out of it. From the restart York showed ambition to run from the edge of their 22 but an inaccurate pass from Dawes to Portrykus saw the ball go to ground which was seized upon by Rob Kitching who whilst being tackled under the York posts executed
the most exquisite off loads out the back of his hand to put Tom Wright in to score. Which he then converted. 29 – 13.
York to their credit did not give in and continued to have a go at the Driffield defence. With a few minutes remaining they were perhaps fortunate to get the benefit of a penalty try decision after Dawes had rounded the Driffield defence and beat the last defender by passing to his support runners on his inside shoulder. Pete Martin spilled the ball with the line at his mercy but the referee saw an infringement against him that had prevented him collecting the pass and scoring. Dawes converted 29 – 20. Driffield completed the scoring with a 40 metre penalty with the last kick off the game. 32 – 20.
Driffield just winners on the day taking their chances whilst York squandered theirs. The only positive for York was they outscored their hosts in the second half
