With the league already decided (York named as champions) and most of Yorkshire One already in postseason, York had two games remaining. The first game was away at Heath who just missed out on the league playoff spot.
Based outside of Halifax in West Yorkshire, the Heath pitch is fairly small and is flanked by wooded hills and two non-working sandstone mills. The April grass grew on a soft surface in good condition. Heath had kindly provided a pre-match welcoming buffet for all of York’s committee members and travelling supporters. Both teams selected strong fifteens. Chris Peace started at scrum-half for York with Jon Dawes and Sam Forbes in the centres and George Davies at fullback. Richard Brown was absent for Heath, Jordan Moana playing at number Eight.
Heath took an early lead in the game when flanker Jason Merrie carried the ball forward and possession was retained and recycled before scrum-half, Peter Birkett, got over the line. Ezra Hinchcliffe (centre) kicked the conversion. Both teams were looking to involve the backs. Heath played through a set move at speed and for York, Jon Dawes showed soft hands, involving others. York and Heath have strong forwards with Matt Beasty (Heath second row) battling with Chris Fox.Jon Dawes scored for York after an open overlap was created with Harry Taylor on the wing. There was no need for the final pass and John missed his own conversion. Heath replied, Alex McFadden (hooker), Matt Beasty and Chris Moore (prop-forward) all went close in the tight before Jordan Moana powered over one pass out from the ruck. The conversion was good, 14-5 at half-time.
Both teams used their backs as the second-half progressed, Heath knocked on in midfield presenting an opportunity for Gareth Singleton on the wing but the ball was turned over during recycle. The influential Jason Merrie pushed over to score for Heath with Ezra Hinchcliffe extending their lead with the conversion. Will Atkin came on for York at scrum-half with Chris Peace moving in to the centres. Marc Benson swapped with Chris Fox in the second row and Lewi Jackson changed with Steve Johnson at tight-head.
Harry Taylor scored for York in plenty of space on the wing and the conversion by Jon Dawes was excellent. The Heath forwards competed at all times with their captain and flanker, Ian Downsborough often involved. York didn’t have the numbers to stop Jordan Moana getting his second (converted) try of the day.Heath almost scored an impressive try with skilled hands in the backline but a pass was adjudged as forward. Lewi Jackson was involved in the York attack, wanting the ball and supporting others. George Davies linked with Lewis Hannibal (flanker) to score for York, the conversion by Jon Dawes was good. The game ended with a forward pass as Gareth Singleton was heading towards the Heath line.
