A strong Percy Park team beat York at Clifton Park a fortnight ago. After no game last week, York travelled to a win-less Huddersfield YMCA. Chris Fox, Oscar Bell and Jonny Frank all returned to the York side along with captain, Ross White. The loss to Percy Park broke a six game win streak and pushed York to fifth in the division but they are still amongst the leaders.
It was a convincing win for York. Shane Goulding (number Eight) scored after two minutes when he got on the outside of his defender from first receiver and the York try-scoring was never fully stopped. YMCA, after the initial York score got in to the game. York were stepping up in defence and competing at nearly every breakdown, this resulted in YM getting a couple of penalties. Gavin Stead, at twelve, kicked them both but that was the last of the home team's points. When clearing their own twenty-two, a YMCA pass went to ground. Liam Hessay, replacing Declan Cusack at fly-half, kicked it in to the try-zone and touched the ball down. Oscar Bell, York's muscular flanker, is continuing his excellent season, especially in the absence of Joe Maud. He made thirty metres downhill before Sam Fletcher, the YM full-back, stopped him. The covering defence couldn't stop the York support though and loose-head prop, John Aikman, got the try. John, who joined York in the summer, has provided fantastic experience and support to the younger players as well as propping up a reliable York scrummage.Sam Elliot made progress down one wing and intelligently retained possession. The ball was recycled and shipped to the opposite wing and Will Fordy on temporarily for Rob Hodges, strode in.
Liam kicked all four conversions in the first half and York had secured the try-bonus point. YMCA were competitive but York were putting pressure on them and they made mistakes. The cold weather was not beneficial to ball-handling for either team. The York scrum was dominant.
In the loose, Chris Fox passed to Cade Robinson who found centre, Sam Forbes in support. Both passes were in contact and Sam scored. Sam got his second try of the game a few minutes later when York had players in space out-wide. The forward pack were tying the YM defenders close in.Shane passed to Toby Atkin off the back of an attacking scrummage and he scored before Cade Robinson (second-row) broke a tackle on the YM thirty and went over.
The score was 6-52 in the end. York were clinical. Every time they visited the YM twenty-two they scored. It was a fairly complete performance.
York host Moortown next Saturday at Clifton Park. York are now in third in the league behind Scarborough and Moortown!
