York went to 3rd placed Wath, the South Yorkshiremen reputed to be the best scrummagers in the league, and 14 points ahead of the visitors at the start of the day..
The game proved to be a good display of league rugby, both teams competing well. There was one surprise in the York Team, with James Arkle taking a rest from the 4th team, playing in the number 9 shirt, welcome back James. The writer personally enjoying how he played.
The first 15 minutes gave an empty scoreboard, but Wath were pressurising York, York’s defence held out as it did throughout the game, defending as a line. The Wath big forwards being repelled time and again.
The York game, seemed to adhere to the game plan as played over the last few matches, using the forwards to power forward, the 2 usual culprits at the fore, Joe Maud and Willem Enslin causing the home team problems, Enslin enjoying himself, as he swatted defenders, and Maud linking in the running line.
The first half seeing York holding their own and pressurising in the scrum, and Andy Kay and the other guys doing well in the line. York scoring 2 tries, one from a driving maul, Maud grounding the ball, Sam Potrykus crossing the whitewash for his first of the afternoon, Dawes converting both, score at half time, Wath 8 York 14. Wow, the pundits had York losing this game, luckily the York players hadn’t read that script.
The second half was fairly even, it saw a try from both sides, and a sin binning each, the Wath scrum half was off for back chat, and Dan Coe saw yellow for going off his feet in front of the York posts. Sam Potrykus is still catching his breath, after scoring his second try of the game, he caught a Wath pass, on about the half way line, he out paced the Wath chasers, scoring under the posts, Dawes adding the extras, he also added 2 penalties.
Final score Wath 13 York 27
This was a good game of rugby, York should be proud of themselves in a well won game. York are playing as a team and it is paying off.
