PROMOTION-CHASING York RUFC kept up the pressure on the two teams above them in Yorkshire One with a hard-fought 17-15 win at Dinnington.
York needed a late converted try to stay within a point of top two Wheatley Hills and Bradford Salem.
The visitors started brightly and went ahead with a Paul Williams penalty.
Despite further pressure, York failed to add to that score until the half-hour mark.
A scrum on the Dinnington ten-metre line allowed captain Jon Sharpe to pick up from the base and feed scrum-half Ben Johnson, who sent winger Joe Maud over for a try.
Paul Williams added the extras, but Dinnington were awarded a penalty soon after the restart to make the half-time score 10-3.
The hosts asserted themselves in the second half and added an early try to make the score 10-8.
That was how it stayed until the last 15 minutes, when Dinnington also added a converted score to lead 15-10.
However, man of the match Grant Williams was performing sterling work in York’s lineout and securing good ball for the backs. That allowed Paul Williams to set up a move in midfield and Dave Ellershaw broke clear before feeding try scorer Rich Downey.
With the scores level, Williams held his nerve to convert and seal the victory.
The York second team turned in a great performance, but ended up losing 19-10 to a good Wharfedale side.
