INJURY-RAVAGED York RUFC nudged back into the promotion frame in Yorkshire One with a 29-7 victory over Bridlington.
The home side endured a nightmare start to the game at Clifton Park when they lost another player to injury – influential lineout man Grant Williams fracturing a collarbone in a nasty fall.
However, Gavin Day replaced him and stepped up to the mark, winning his own ball and his fair share of opposition ball.
York took the lead through a Ben Johnson penalty after ten minutes.
Their first try came when a second Johnson penalty effort struck a post, only to be gathered by a barnstorming Will Dutton who crashed over underneath the posts. Centre Rich Downey, York’s man of the match, converted for a 10-0 lead.
York scored another excellent try with Alex Nixon gathering his own chip from full-back before feeding Jo Maud, who sent Sam Potrykus over.
York had a half-time lead of 17-0, but were wary of letting it slip after the previous weekend’s second half collapse at Bradford Salem. There were no problems this weekend as York began the second period strongly.
The game was in the bag after a superb sweeping move from York.
Good work from the base of the scrum by captain Jon Sharpe allowed the York backs to put the ball through every set of hands before the outstanding Dave Routledge went over in the corner.
The final York try fell to Potrykus as a training ground move worked to perfection.
Johnson bluffed the Brid defence and Potrykus came through the centres to score under the posts.
Brid were awarded a dubious penalty try in the dying minutes.
