York RUFC start 2010 with Yarnbury victory
YORK RUFC are looking to climb the Yorkshire One table after kicking off 2010 with an 18-10 victory over basement side Yarnbury.
The Clifton Park success leaves York in sixth place, three points and three places behind next weekend’s opponents Castleford, with a game in hand.
The home side played some superb rugby on a tricky surface on Saturday – with volunteers removing more than 40 buckets of water from the pitch to ensure the game went ahead.
They took the lead after a flowing move, started from the back of a scrum and the hands of skipper Jon Sharpe.
Full-back Alex Dixon and winger Rich Downey exchanged passes and Dixon crossed the whitewash.
Centre Sam Arkle also touched down for an unconverted try, while Downey also got on the scoresheet.
Fly-half Paul Williams kicked a penalty to keep York’s noses in front as Yarnbury capitalised on a defensive error to score a converted try and a penalty.
Sharpe was York’s stand-out performer, while Stu Davies turned over a lot of ball on his return to the squad as a substitute.
Hooker Matt Hargreaves and Downey also caught the eye.
