York travelled to Silver Royd Scarborough knowing there was a tough challenge awaiting them and looking for their first away win of the season. York have had mixed fortunes against their east coast rivals in recent matches and knew that a strong cohesive team effort would be needed to secure a victory.
Scarborough had first use of the slope and breeze and failed to take advantage of either. In fact it was York who scored first after 8 minutes when good York handling allowed York centre Goulding to cross over wide out. Conversion missed. Scarborough managed to bring play to the York 22 after loose York play however the resulting lineout allowed York to kick clear.
Further Scarborough incursions into the York half brought a penalty against York for an infringement at the ruck. Fortunately for York fly half Chadwick’s penalty flew well wide. Dawes collected the wayward kick and quickly had York on the attack from deep in their 22. A series of rucks and mauls allowed Dawes to kick York onto the Scarborough 22. Pressure was short lived with the home side again making inroads into the York half, however handling errors meant York captain Fox could gather and charge 40 yards down field, subsequent good work by the York pack allowing fly Britland to release the York backs. Meredith crashing over on 20 minutes. Dawes adding the conversion. 12 nil York.
Scarborough’s pack were dominating the scrums and were using this domination to make inroads into the York half but a combination of good York defence and poor handling by the Scarborough backs allowing York to clear there lines on each occasion.
It wasn’t until the 35th minute after a series of Scarborough penalties and handling errors that York gained and maintained a foot hold in the home sides half, from one such penalty 5 yards from the home sides line, quick thinking by York 9 Atkin, saw him take the Scarborough defence by surprise when he darted over for Yorks 3rd try. Conversion missed. 17 – nil. Scarborough had chance to reduce the deficit on the stroke of half time but again the Chadwick boot sending the ball wide of the upright.
York started the 2nd half with the wind at the their backs kicking deep from the restart, Scarborough immediately bringing play into the York half, it would be 15 minutes before York again brought play back into their opponents half..
During the subsequent period Scarborough poured the pressure on York and again on several occasions with the line beckoning they could not make that final telling pass on 3 occasions each time the ball going to ground. Scarborough pressure in the scrum was beginning to tell on the York pack. Such pressure leading to York prop Coe been yellow carded on 52 minutes. Home side pressure continued with York conceding penalties, each time the home side chose the scrum rather than kick for goal. York finally won the ball Dawes making the clearing kick straight into the waiting arms of Scarborough wing Domett who leaving York defenders in his wake put full back Dennis into the corner. Conversion missed. 17-5
York made several brief incursions into the Scarborough half but could not mount any serious threat. Scarborough broke out but yet again poor handling by their backs with the line beckoning let York off the hook. Home side errors again meant the visitors could mount pressure in the home 22 but again the pressure came to nothing.
Scarborough with their pack dominant at the set piece meant they had a sound base off which to mount several attacks and from one such scrum there backs again cut loose this time managing to hold onto the ball allowing captain Ratcliffe to score. Conversion missed 17-10.
Scarborough now sensed the game was there for the taking and quickly brought play deep into the York 22 where they were awarded a scrum. York unable to withstand the pressure where adjudged to have collapsed the scrum by referee Dickinson (who had had a decent game) awarding the penalty try under the posts. Chadwick adding the conversion, 17-17. 2 minutes remaining.
York to their credit came straight back at Scarborough and quickly found themselves on the home side 22, the ball was release to fly half Britland, who in a moment of inspiration chipped over the defence, gathering his kick and breaking a desperate Scarborough challenge darted 15 yards to touch down, game won. Dawes added the conversion, no time for a restart. 24-17 York
Whilst the manner of the victory was far from convincing, the young York side can take heart that they held out to secure the win whilst been under such pressure most of the second half.
York have thus far this season struggled to field a settled side due to injury and unavailability. They do however have a squad of very talented individuals that hopefully given time will gel into a team that is capable of pushing for promotion. In Britland they have a fly half who if given good quality consistent ball has the ability to dictate play through his kicking from hand and by releasing his backs. There is however considerable work to be done on the training field in the coming weeks and months to find the combinations that will produce cohesive rugby, that will trouble the stronger teams in Yorkshire One.
