So after a very wet week the York squad and a reduced crew of supporters, about 15 or so, ventured east over a foggy Wolds to Hullensians. As far as I could tell no one had ever been before [certainly at senior level]. However, it was not raining, the welcome in the clubhouse was warm and the pitch though having some very wet patches was nowhere as bad as some I have seen. Hullensians had won 3 from 4 at home and opinion was divided on the Yorkshire 1 forum as to the eventual outcome. A home win probably just in the majority. This was not going to be helped by the withdrawal of Rich Roberts and Sam Potrykus. So Sam Blain was given a chance to enhance his growing reputation. Sam along with Liam Watling [making his debut] available due to their game having a late call off.
Hullensians came at York and only after 4 minutes scored a penalty 3-0. York lost Dan Coe to a shoulder injury after only 10 minutes. York were exerting a lot of pressure now on the home side and driving upfield. After several well defended attempts, Matt Hargreaves finally emerging from the bottom of the pile to claim the try, scoring right in the corner. Difficult conversion missed 3-5. Running and turning with the ball was a real problem for both sides in the increasingly slippery conditions. Mid half Hullensians had a player binned and on 36 minutes Marcus Britland was for York. Hullensians had no sooner got their player back than another was carded. On around 38 minutes York scored again in the other corner, Alex Nixon diving over after some good kicking and chasing. Another difficult conversion missed 3-10 and halftime. By now it was getting very gloomy and the floodlights were on.
The second half was initially end to end, with a lot of penalties and both sides eventually back to 15 men. Hullensians scored a try on 55 minutes and had the chance to even the scores with a very kickable conversion but it was missed 8-10. On 58 minutes York won a penalty and went for goal, George Davis appeared to have got the job done but at the last second the ball moved away and hit the post and came out. Both sides were trying to get the ball out to runners but handling and staying on your feet, was at a premium. It could still go either way but in the last 15 minutes the impetus started to swing to York. Securing the ball, with offloads and passes starting to stick, results in a try for David Bates on 73 minutes, ably converted by George 17-8. York looked to have the measure of their opponents now and a further try was only saved by a last ditch covering chase and tackle. With 3 minutes remaining Eddie Bradshaw got the ball about 35 metres out with some space to run at the defence, breaking the line to score under the posts, George converting 24-8.
A hard earned but ultimately bonus point win, moving York back to 4th in the league. Pressure is still on with games coming up against Malton[2nd] and Middlebro [3rd] in the next 2 weeks.
