I was not at the game and due to a breakdown in communication by the usual match reporters, I have put this together, loosely based on the Malton report and adding the York scorers.
Maltons recent run of poor results, having already confirmed their play off place, continued with their first home loss of the season. York themselves were looking to reverse a poor showing against Hullensians and protect their 3rd place in the league.
The first quarter of the game saw both sides testing each other out in all departments, with York holding sway up front and Malton putting together some good passages of play in the loose. Maltons luck ran out after fifteen minutes, when they temporarily lost fullback Ian Cooke with an injury and permanently lost flanker Tom Lowry with a shoulder injury. Yorks first try came when a kick to the corner in the twentieth minute from a penalty produced the opportunity for a catch and drive. They executed the move perfectly to record the first score. Credited to Sam Thorpe and ably converted by George Davies 0-7. Against the strong breeze, Malton were coping well but when York again kicked deep, Malton failed to clear their lines and conceded a five metre scrum. The York pack made their presence felt and shoved Malton back over the line for their second try. Touched down by Marcus Britland and again converted by George Davies for a 14 point half time lead.
With Cooke restored after the interval, Malton were looking to comeback. However, when Malton lost a line out close to their own line after ten minutes, York used the power of the pack to drive over for their third try, again touched down by Marcus Britland, conversion missed 0-19. Much of the play was now confined to centre field, with some big tackles being made on both sides but very little spectator rugby being played. York, however, with the game drawing to a close did provide the crowd with a good piece of running rugby. Running the ball from defence they made ground rapidly, passing through several pairs of hands and with backs and forwards combining well, for David Bates to get the final and bonus point try to seal a well deserved victory.
With the 2nd team also winning, by 48-5, the bragging rights belonged to York this week.
After a week off for Easter, the league will be resumed with the penultimate game of the season, home to Middlesbrough who are 1 point below York in 4th.
