The first half was not a classic and contained too many handling errors from both sides, which in itself, contributed to making it a very open game.
York managed to score 3 first half trys from Ben Williams, Tom Bullough & Chris Cambridge without exerting too much pressure. All three trys were long-range efforts. Firstly, Chris Cambridge picking up some loose ball in midfield and impressively stretching out to run half the length of the field to score under the posts. Ben Williams try came after some good handling through the backs leaving him half the field to cover and a couple of men to beat to score a very good try. Tom Bullough scored from what appeared to be an interception after some poor handling from the Selby Backs. He then out paced the covering Selby defence to score in the corner.
In between times, for long periods Selby, with some strong forwards play and some undisciplined tackling from York, held York in their own half for long periods, resulting in York conceding two tries in either corner. The score at half time was
York 15 Selby 10.
York started the stronger in the second half, finally putting a few phases together, which gave the York backs more room to express themselves, even though the handling errors still persisted. The platform for this was generally created from some strong forward drives, particularly from Tom Leonard, who had a very strong game throughout and was justifiably named Man of the Match and even managed to cap it all off with a try of his own. Callum Simpson and James Field linked play well in the loose and all round York had a much-improved second half.
Selby became more and more frustrated, as they didn’t seem to be able to get their hands on the ball, resulting in some overheated moments, where more than one Selby player was warned for ill discipline.
York rounded the game off creating some more space through the midfield backs making useful breaks to put away Ben Williams in the corner for his second try of the match.
In summary, a very scrappy first half was followed by a much improved and more cohesive team performance in the second half.
The final score was a win for York by 25 -10
