Firstly - I know I'm infallible, but somehow my engineering background let me down badly when staking out the posts. I was sure that I'd put them correctly at the half-way line, but it seems I was approximately 10m out. I should have known then it was going to be a difficult morning.
Bit of a shortage of players, parents, and Coaches this morning - all sorts of reasons, but meant that there was a bit of multi-tasking going on. All credit to Ted who took on a huge workload that day.
Anyway - what to say about the game. I've got a lot of scribbles in my note-book; none of which make much sense. I shall therefore keep this brief,as I'm still puzzled by what happened that morning.
First Half
Otley kick-off and score after 2 minutes - a nice run from 20m out, around the York defence, who were caught napping a little (0-5); converted (0-7).
York restart, and the York Forwards are rucking well. Connor kicks it to half way into Otley territory and Tom chases it up, but Otley clear it back to their 10m line. Barney has a great run, and gets to close to scoring, but is stopped 5m out and Otley clear again. A couple of minutes later and Barney makes another run and is nearly through, but is stopped.
The game is pretty even at this stage, with York contesting better in the break-down; new lad Sam G is playing well. Otley then make another break away from 30m out and score (0-12); no conversion.
Barney has yet another sniff at a score, but can't quite get through. Jay comes off injured. Half Time.
Second Half
York restart, and Otley run it back; great tackle by Will S on a lad twice his size! York line-out is collected, but York judged to have infringed. Otley line-out is stolen by York 10m out from the York try-line. Otley rip the ball back though and push through to score (0-17); converted (0-19).
The rest of the half is a series of courageous attempts by York to score, but which are ajudged to be penalties and infringements. Freddie comes off after a high tackle.
A tough morning for the lads, who to their credit worked hard throughout.
Final Score York 0-19 Otley
We hope that Jay and Freddie make a full speedy recovery.
