The scene was set for a terrific day of rugby. It was late afternoon, however, before all concerned were to realise just how terrific. Quite ironic but the most relaxed were the players themselves as they basked in glorious sunshine between matches. It was parents and supporters who were on edge as they raced to see results of other games and who York may play next.
The ten participative teams played in two pools of five with the top two of each pool playing off in semi finals with the wins going through to a final knockout. Rather ironic but York's opening encounter was against Pocklington who were in the same pool. Having lost to them on the previous Friday evening much pride was at stake. Two early tries by Simpson gave York the start they were looking for. Although Pocklington pulled one back, it was York who were the stronger and won the day.

It had been a tremendous team effort by York. All touring players had participated in the tournament and each in their own way had contributed to the final victory. Eight different players had scored tries with three players each scoring six. Recognition must also go to the workhorses who scrummaged, mauled and rucked to obtain possession and make the ball available. As so often they can be the neglected and unsung heroes: not on this occasion as the entire touring party stood arm in arm with the winners trophy held aloft. With their pink socks they may have looked more like fairies but on the rugby field they played just like heroes. Chairman! Your words were heeded.
