The opening encounter saw both teams pressing but it was Pocklington who produced an early try from their second surge. As York got into their stride and adapted to 10s rugby they took the lead with tries from Simpson and then Cambridge to take a narrow lead. (7-10). York started to dominate but further scoring opportunities were squandered before Pocklington sealed the session with a break-away try. It was a session that York should have won.
FIRST SESSION : YORK 10 POCKLINGTON 14
The second session saw less dynamic play but phases became controlled and methodical with both sided making territorial advantage whilst in possession. The session looked like ending in stalemate before Stephens made an individual run on the blind side to bring York the only score of the game. Pocklington almost equalised in the dying seconds but a last ditch tackle by York saved the day and gave some pride.
SECOND SESSION : YORK 5 POCKLINGTON 0
Pocklington started this third session in a strong, positive fashion that brought them two early tries from decisive breaks. As York became more settled they came more into the game. After Cooper jinxed his way through the Pocklington defense to score a York comeback looked to be on the cards. Although York continued to press the Pocklington defense held strong and thy maintained their points advantage for this session.
THIRD SESSION : YORK 5 POCKLINGTON 12
York had it all to do in the final session but at only six points down it would only take a converted try to take the aggregate lead. York started well and in positive fashion but it was Pocklington who scored first when they picked up in the loose whilst near the York line and dived over. As York tried to chase the game a surging drive by Pocklington brought them a further try. No effort was spared by York but a sixteen points deficit proved to be beyond their capabilities in the few minutes remaining.
FOURTH SESSION : YORK 0 POCKLINGTON 10
AGGREGATE SCORE : YORK 20 POCKLINGTON 36
It had been a most entertaining encounter played in excellent spirit by both teams. With both teams being on the eve of their end of season tours it had been an ideal curtain raiser for the players, parents and supporters alike. York had sponsored a trophy for the competition, which Pocklington proposed to host a challenge for next season. Adding to the evening encounter was the prospect of both teams facing each other again over the weekend as each were heading for the same destination and the same festival. Another day, another game!!!
