Match report vs Huddersfield

York Wasp vs Huddersfield 4 /1 W
On a cold but sunny morning York U13s welcomed Huddersfield for a couple of matches. Following some training prior to the Remembrance silence, Wasps received the ball from the kick off . In a match full of determination and commitment, both sides found opportunities to open the scoring however last ditch defending kept things tight initially. Huddersfield showed a real aptitude when it came to the breakdown creating plenty of phases, whilst Wasps kept the edge in the more unstructured elements of the game turning over plenty of opposition possession. Slowing York edged ahead and by half time were three tries to the good as a result of some great handling and use of the whole width of the park. Second half was a different story as Huddersfield stuck to their short game, continually driving over the ball and recycling. Wasps defence held firm the most part before a well worked Huddersfield try unlocked it. Frustratingly, Wasps in the second half reverted to one out rugby, something we’ve not seen for the most of this season whilst good in parts it meant that our strong backs had little opportunity to push the score on. Additionally, too many errors crept in playing this tight style of game.
Of note was the tireless work rate of all and the commitment at the tackle as well as quick ball created at the ruck.

York Spiders definitely benefited from watching the first match and quickly established themselves in the game by good use of the forwards before quick ball going wide fed the backs who in turn kept the scoreboard ticking over. Huddersfield in the second half were tiring, however show tremendous character and played to the end with their heads held high. Most of the tries were as a result of good team dynamics, with players supporting each other. A highlight was a try following a predetermined high kick behind the Huddersfield defensive line from which Spiders profited. The ability to change the angle of attack just kept the opposition guessing ! !
