York U13s opened their 15-a-side account with an excellent and hard-fought win over Malton. York started nervously and looked rusty as they were pegged back in their own half for the opening 5 minutes by a much larger but less mobile Malton side. Nerves were settled however when Archie broke away and ran a try in under the posts from the half-way line. Sam E duly converted.
As the first half continued York started to dominate the game, with the York pack leading the way, pushing back the physically bigger Malton forwards, taking scrums against the head and even winning good line out ball against the Malton giants. York had a few giants of their own with man-of-the-match flanker Joe S tearing into tackle after tackle, George D seemingly everywhere at once and the backs starting to create chances despite some uncharacteristic handling errors.
The second try was created by a Charlie R cross-field kick which Jonathan S took into contact and popped up for Sam E to run into the corner. Sam E, Wilkinson-esque, converted from the touchline with a glorious kick. York went into half-time 21-0 ahead when Will A finished a quick passing move with a try under the posts, followed by Sam's third conversion.
The second half was much tougher as York played into a fierce wind. The strength in depth was apparent as six subs were used and all performed very well in the game. The pressure was heavy but York continued to hold Malton until the final minute when they went over for an unconverted consolation try.
In the end, this was a great win created by a fantastic performance from the forwards against the odds and finished by the backs. Tom W added some height to the line out and Tom W (2), Sam W and Angus B all had excellent first games. Well done to all.
